Hoards Found in Hertfordshire
St. Albans
The ace up Hertfordshire's sleeve when it comes to hoard discoveries. The Roman city at St. Albans, Verulamium, was one of largest and most important towns in the whole of roman Britain. The original tribal capital of the Catuvellauni was located at Wheathampstead and later reestablished at Verlamion, the town that would become Verulamium. More than 80 hoards have been found in and around St. Albans.
Essendon
The Essendon Hoard, hoard of iron age gold coins of Tasciovanus, ruler of the Catuvellauni tribe.
Baldock
The Near-Baldock Hoard, roman jewellery and a votive figurine found by Alan Meek.
Barkway
The Barkway Hoard, hoard of roman metal work found in 1743. Thought to have come from a temple to the roman god Mars.
